MONTICELLO – The planned construction of a Sullivan County Catskills Visitors’ Center in the Town of Thompson received a $500,000 grant from the state.
The project, expected to cost between $4 million and $4.5 million, will be a further boost to the tourism industry of the area, said Roberta Byron-Lockwood, president of the Sullivan County Visitors Association.
“This is going to be a great way for us to harness all that visitation and bring in additional repeat visitors and encourage visitors to go and see what else we have to offer in our region and in our county,” Byron-Lockwood said. “That’s a great way for us to make sure that we maximize the potential of new dollars, new growth and enhance the bottom line of our economic welfare in our county.”
The state grant comes from Senator John Bonacic, who is retiring from public office at the end of the year.
While no specific location has been chosen for a visitors’ center, Byron-Lockwood said it would be in the Town of Thompson along Route 17, the future I-86.
