MID-HUDSON – Two Sears and one Kmart store among the 142 slated to be closed by the end of the year as part of the company’s Chapter 11 reorganization plans.
They have been targeted for being financial under-achievers.
The company has been facing financial challenges in recent years with increased competition from other company stores and Internet sales.
Among the stores listed by Sears to close in the region are Sears brand stores in Nanuet and Yonkers and a Kmart store in Mahopac. All three are slated to close on January 31, 2019.
According to the state labor department, the Mahopac store closing will result in 42 layoffs. The Nanuet store closure will mean 88 layoffs and the Yorktown Heights store closure will mean 55 layoffs.
Also closing, a Kmart in Westfall Township, PA, about a mile from Port Jervis.  That store originally opened in Port Jervis in 1977 but moved across the Delaware River in 1993.
