Postupack and Hein celebrate the county’s cultural history
KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein, County Clerk Nina Postupack and County Historian Geoffrey Miller announced the eighth Annual Cultural Heritage Week, which runs from October 12 through 21st.
They met Wednesday with stakeholders at the Reher Center for Immigrant & Cultural History in Downtown Kingston, an old Jewish bakery transformed into a nonprofit organization. Hein said resources such as the Reher Center are important magnets for economic tourism.
“It’s real in Ulster County, history is real here,” Hein said. “This isn’t something we think about, that happened in some far-off place. It’s so real, we can touch it. It’s a special opportunity to be able to truly understand history in a meaningful and tangible way.”
The week is marked by numerous events throughout the area, at local historical sites. Postupack noted that November 15 marks the 200th Anniversary of the county courthouse, which will bring special exhibits, re-enactments, and a special session of the State Court of Appeals.
“None of this would be possible without working together,” Postupack said.
Miller said, “What happens never really goes away, it stays here, in the things people touch, the little pieces of paper that somehow end up in an archive, when I stand in a place, I feel the reverberations of all time coming through me.”
