HAVERSTRAW – Metro-North Railroad, working with its ferry contractor NYWaterway, has replaced the old ferry dock in North Rockland. Commuters may take the ferry from there across the Hudson River to the Ossining dock where they then connect with Metro-North service for trains bound for Grand Central Terminal or Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie.
The dock was replaced over a single weekend with no disruption to regular service.
The old dock was close to two decades old and was past its useful life,
said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi.
“We have recently replaced the original ferry dock at Haverstraw for our West of Hudson customers who use the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry,” Rinaldi said. “This service began in 2000.”
The new dock will have a 20-year life expectancy.
The new dock, paid for with $1.1 million in Federal Highway Administration funds with support from the state transportation department and Village of Haverstraw, is more stable than the old one because of the type of construction and is equipped with a counterweighted loading ramp.
“We’re always looking to find ways to improve the commuting experience for our West of Hudson customers,” said Rinaldi. “This new dock adds a bit more convenience to their daily commute, enhances safety and is a valuable investment for our Rockland County customers.”
