NEW WINDSOR – Newburgh city officials had a scare for a time on Thursday when they thought that an old pipe under Washington Lake in New Windsor was leaking with water running outside its surface, which could have eroded the earth under the lake.
Engineers were brought in to conduct an emergency examination, said City Manager Michael Ciaravino.
“What our emergency engineering team has determined is that the water discoloration is coming from movement across the face of the dam rather than from what is called piping along the outer edge of the pipe and the earth underneath the reservoir,” Ciaravino said. “So while we still have emergency repairs to do, we are calling off the urgent alert message and we believe the situation is under control at this time.”
The City of Newburgh has been facing infrastructure issues under the former reservoir in addition to the ongoing problem of contamination from the New York Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport.
