WHITE PLAINS – The US Army Corps of Engineers has extended the public comment period on proposals to construct storm surge barriers in New York Harbor for another 30 days to September 30 and is working to establish other opportunities for communication with the public.
The corps’ decision comes on the urging of Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY17).
“As I’ve said before, a project of this significance must be fully understood by all who would be affected, and we must not rush into construction and permanent change to the nature of the river until we have public approval to proceed.”
The Army Corps plans to circulate a draft report later this year to provide an opportunity for public and agency consideration and comment.
