MIDDLETOWN – The state
is going to pay some of the cost to remove the remnants of a large vacant
building that was destroyed by fire at the Middletown Community Campus.

The state’s Economic Development Corporation Board Thursday approved
a $500,000 grant toward removal of the debris, said the EDC’s Simone
Bethune.

“This project will encourage revitalization of downtown Middletown,
support elevation of the local housing stock and encourage development
of the industrial and commercial sectors within the local economy,”
she said.
The Middletown Community Campus was formerly the location of the state
psychiatric hospital.

Buildings on the campus became targets for vandalism after the hospital
closed.
