NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Council tonight is expected to add three firefighter positions to the general fund. That means unless the city wins a new round of federal funding, nine current firefighters will lose their jobs at the end of the month.
A total of 12 of the city’s firefighters have been paid for through
the federal program, but unless that is re-funded, they were to be cut.
Council members weeks ago agreed to retain three of them through the city
budget and that is expected to be approved tonight.
Members of the firefighters’ union and supporters are expected to lobby the council urging them not to cut any of the positions.
