WASHINGTON – US Senator
Charles Schumer called on federal officials on Wednesday to “quickly
finalize” volatility standards to stabilize crude oil to be shipped
by rail because without being stabilized, it makes explosions “far
more likely.”
The senator made his demand of the departments of Transportation and Energy after learning of new data from the US Energy Information Administration.
“It finds that the amount of crude by rail moving throughout New York was declining, now is back on the rise,” Schumer said. “We have a bunch of accidents in the last few years… everyone of them has had Bakken crude in it, and the Federal Railroad Administration has cited high vapor pressure as one of the potential causes of these kinds of crashes.”
The senator said it is important for the oil volatility study to be finished and used to create new standards so shipment is safer.
