WASHINGTON – The Mamaroneck-Sheldrake River project will be included in the Water Resource Development Act, local lawmakers announced.
Without progress on this project, residents and business owners in the area remain at risk of severe flooding, according to Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Eliot Engel.
In April 2007, a nor’easter caused record flooding in the Village of Mamaroneck with over $50 million in damages and impacting over 50 percent of structures within the study area. The storm results in floodwaters peaking on the Mamaroneck River in four hours and in the Sheldrake River in about six hours.
The project is aimed at preventing such devastation in the future.
