ALBANY – Legislation
that would require all school buses in New York to have over-the-shoulder
seat belts has been introduced by Senator David Carlucci (D, Nanuet).
The measure would require that students wear them at all times while on
a bus.
“The NTSB is telling us seat belts save lives and lessen injuries,”
Carlucci said. “New York needs to take this guidance seriously,
and lawmakers must make this legislation a top propriety.”
The NTSB report comes on the heels of the deadly New Jersey bus crash,
which was caused by the driver making an illegal U-turn.
California is the only state that requires those seat belts on school
buses. In New York, school buses must have over-the-lap belts, but it
is up to the school districts as to whether students must wear them.
