Storm turns deadly: Young girl killed by falling tree

MID-HUDSON – Tuesday’s storm with strong winds, heavy rain
and hail and reports of tornadoes was deadly.
Newburgh City Police said an 11-year-old girl was unloading the family’s
car with her mother at their 23 Robinson Avenue home at 4:15 p.m. when
the wind toppled a large tree onto the vehicle. The child was rushed to
St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The
mother suffered minor injuries. Police did not release the names of the
victims.
Because of damage to trees and electrical infrastructure with an unconfirmed report of a tornado, all streets in the City of Newburgh were closed until further notice.
There is also an unconfirmed report of another death when a tree fell on a vehicle on Albany Post Road in the Town of Newburgh.
Livingston Manor and Narrowsburg were hammered with strong winds, hail and a suspected tornado as the storm rolled through the region late Tuesday afternoon.
The Town of Highland was virtually shut off from the outside world as trees came down across the Sullivan County town. Crews of volunteers armed with chainsaws were out cutting up and removing trees from roads.
In Fishkill, a tree was reported to have come crashing down on at least one house and on Ketchamtown Road in Wappinger, a car was struck by a falling tree.
In the Village of Walden, a state of emergency has been declared because of storm damage.
A state of emergency has been declared in Putnam County as well as the towns of Newburgh, Cochecton, Forestburgh, Highland, Lumberland, Mamakating, Tusten, Smallwood in the Town of Bethel and Rock Hill/Glen Wild in the Town of Thompson.
An emergency order restricting travel in the southern area of Dutchess
County including the City of Beacon, Town and Village of Fishkill, Town
of Wappinger and Village of Wappingers Falls, ended at 4 a.m.
Metro-North Rail service on all lines was suspended Tuesday evening because of downed trees on tracks.
Because of the severe storm damage, Newburgh and Monticello schools are closed today.
