KINGSTON – Ulster County
will recognize Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and the entire month of
April by illuminating the Ulster County Office Building at 244 Fair Street
and the cupola at 1 Pearl Street in Kingston with blue lights.

“In the United States more than 1.5 million Americans are living
with autism spectrum disorder,” said County Executive Michel Hein.
“Autism Awareness Month and World Autism Day provide an important
opportunity to shine light on the critical work of advocates, professionals
and family members who assist those with autism every day.

County Health and Mental Health Commissioner Dr. Carol Smith said about
one in 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder,
according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control. “There
is currently no cure for ASD. However, research shows that early intervention
treatment services can improve a child’s development.” Smith
said if a parent thinks their child might have ASD, they should contact
the child’s doctor.
