NEW PALTZ – The nine-month-old
moratorium on new construction on Route 299 in the Town of New Paltz has
been extended by another four months.

The move by the town board gives officials time to complete the proposed
development scenario near Thruway exit 18, said Town Supervisor Neil Bettez.

“We are trying to balance out property owners’ rights to develop
their land to maximize their potential profits, but we also think the
people who live in the town have a right to decided what their town looks
like and how it is developed,” he said. “That is one of the
big obligations of a town is to zoning.”
There are a number of proposed projects along the Route 299 corridor
including a fast food restaurant, a drug store, apartments and hotel and
Bettez said the town is considering three different development zones
to fit in with the composure of each area of New Paltz.
