GOSHEN – A proposal to change the Orange County pay-to-play law that was expected to come up for a vote Thursday was pulled off the legislative agenda by Chairman Stephen Brescia.
Support for the change has faded and he believes questions cloud the issue.
“There are arguments on both sides,” Brescia said. “There is concern about the constitutionality of the legislation, but we do want to protect the public interest and there is a lot of easiness with the legislation and I don’t there is the support anymore.”
Supporters on the legislature had said there had to be changes to conform with state law, but that would have meant the ceilings on campaign contributions of elected officials would likely rise and that brought out a firestorm of opposition from the public.
