MOUNT VERNON – Mayor Richard Thomas has named Errol McIntosh as the special advisor on the restoration of Memorial Field in Mount Vernon.
McIntosh, a registered architect and former Mount Vernon buildings commissioner, will work directly with the mayor and other city officials to bring Memorial Field back to life as a center for sports and cultural activities in the city.
The field has been shut since 2007. The mayor said the first step will be to excavate the site, crushing boulders, leveling the field, tearing down the grandstands and removing debris. That work could start by spring.
Thomas said while that is underway, plans for restoring the field and track would be drawn up and approved, followed by construction with rebuilding of the grandstands after that.
McIntosh said Memorial Field “is part of Mount Vernon’s history” and he wants to “ensure that it becomes part of its future.”
