ALBANY – The State Police in Troop F, the five counties west of the Hudson River, will enhance their efforts with the use of a drone.
That troop will be one of four in the state to initially launch the new system this month to enhance public safety and assist in natural disaster response. The drones can also be used in dangerous situations and environments, keeping troopers out of harm’s way.
The device is expected to be put into service this month with 14 additional drones deployed throughout the state by April.
Officials said the drones can document and help reconstruct serious motor vehicle crashes in less time than with current methods, resulting in shorter road closures, lessening the impact on motorists. Investigators will also use the drones to document and photograph crime scenes.
Purchasing and operating the systems will provide a cost savings over manned aircraft, officials said.
