KINGSTON – Unwanted scam telephone calls to consumers increased 76 percent in 2017, according to the Consumer Affairs Division of the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
We have all received live and robocalls with utility scams, grandparent scams, charity scams, the computer repair scam and the IRS scam, like this one from a fake federal agent.
“If you fail to return the call or in case if I don’t hear from your attorney either, the only thing I can do is wish you a happy life and the law enforcement team of your state will soon be at your doorstep,” the recorded message stated.
Consumer affairs advised the best defense against those types of scam calls is a healthy amount of skepticism. The agency also says consumers should not hesitate to hang up when they hear a recorded voice, even if it looks like a local call.
