KINGSTON – Julian Schreibman took the oath of office Monday afternoon at the Ulster County Courthouse in Kingston, joined by friends, family, supporters, and fellow members of the judiciary.  The Kingston native was elected to the State Supreme Court bench last November.

The 25-minute ceremony was marked by humorous anecdotes and poignant remarks, as Schreibman touched upon his career as attorney and political candidate.
“This isn’t my first rodeo,” Schreibman said, referring
to his unsuccessful bid for U.S. Congress in 2012 against Chris Gibson.
“The prior rodeos haven’t always worked out the way I hoped
getting into them. There is a sense of dread to what could go wrong again.”
He said it was “extraordinary” to feel the support that that
led to his victory this time around.
Additionally, Schreibman ran briefly for Ulster County district attorney in 2007, and was the Ulster County Democratic Party chairman from 2008 to 2012. In the public sector, he served on the general counsel for the Central Intelligence Agency, and was an assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Upon being sworn, his mother Anne Hebard placed the judicial robe over Schreibman’s shoulders, and he playfully arranged three small duck figurines across the bar, “Getting my ducks in a row,” a tradition begun with his private practice law partners in Manhattan.
“I pledge to see everyone in the community, to listen carefully, and to speak less,” Schreibman said.
His term runs for 14 years.
