GOSHEN – The Alert Cab services in Orange, Sullivan and Rockland
counties will once again offer rides home from bars on New Year’s
Eve compliments of Dana Distributors in Goshen. This is the 32nd year
the Budweiser beer distributor offered the service, this year with 18
cab companies in the three counties participating.

The message is don’t drink and drive, said Dana’s marketing
director Tom Kennedy said Friday while surrounded by police officers during
the annual event announcing the program.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said drunk driving arrests
are down by 16.7 percent in the county because people are people are “paying
attention” to the message.

“What we found in Orange County since the last four years since
we implemented this program is that about nine percent of the individuals
that are arrested for alcohol related offenses – driving while impaired
or driving drunk – have a substance or alcohol abuse problem that
we have to deal with in the criminal justice system. They have to go to
treatment before they will be allowed to plead guilty to something, and
we think that that nine percent is the nine percent that is at the gravest
risk of injuring all of us,” Hoovler said.
Stony Point Town Councilman Thomas Basile said the Alert Cab program
“saves lives.”

State Senator William Larkin said education is a key to reducing drunk
driving.

Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois, Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff
and Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco all had the same message –
don’t become a statistic.

Chester Police Chief Daniel Doellinger, president of the Orange County
Police Chiefs’ Association, assured the public that the police “will
be stepping up” patrols during the New Year’s holiday period.

“Don’t be a jerk,” was the message from State Assemblyman
Karl Brabenec.
