SLOATSBURG – A wrong-way
driver on Route 17 near Davis’ Sport Shop in Sloatsburg was apprehended
early this morning (Saturday) before he could cause any serious damage.

That section of the highway is divided with a concrete barrier between
the north and southbound lanes.

A Ramapo Police officer was driving southbound at 5:30 a.m. when he saw
a vehicle coming at him going northbound in the southbound lanes.

Traffic was light and the officer was able to avoid the oncoming car and
apprehended the violator.

As the officer approached, the vehicle was stopped with a flat tire in
the passing lane facing the wrong direction.

Other officers on the scene used flashing emergency lights to alert motorists
on Route 17.

The driver of the vehicle, Sergio Rodriguez, 22, of Mine Hill, New Jersey,
was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
