Saturday’s first snow of the season added to the atmospher
CARMEL – The sounds of screaming sirens and blasting air horns permeated the Putnam countryside Saturday when firefighters and EMS providers conducted their annual tradition – the Candy Cane Run.
Dozens of first responders traveled throughout neighborhoods in Brewster, Carmel, Mahopac, Mahopac Falls, Putnam Lake, Putnam Valley, Lake Carmel, Kent and Philipstown delivering the traditional holiday treats.
By day’s end, an amazing 36,235 candy canes had been distributed along with 398 dog treats for that special pooch.
Former Carmel Fire Chief and current Putnam Assistant Commissioner of Emergency Services Robert Lipton joined his firefighter brothers and sisters calling the day special. “The firefighters and their families enjoy this day as much as the recipients of the candy canes do. To see the looks on the children’s faces when Santa hands them a candy cane makes all the preparation well worth it!”
