NEWBURGH – Streets in the City of Newburgh need repaving, but there isn’t enough money available to blacktop all that need it.
At Thursday night’s workshop session, Councilman Torrance Harvey floated the idea of an adopt-a-block program for large businesses or institutions located in an area to voluntarily contribute to the street restoration effort.
“There are not-for-profit organizations and buildings that are in close proximity to the very roads that we have in our repavement plan,” Harvey said. “If create an adopt-a-block program, where out of courtesy we are asking these organizations if they have the means to donate a certain amount of money to help repave the streets at least where they are close proximity to, they may be willing to do that.”
Among the entities discussed as possible adopt-a-block donors are colleges and the hospital in Newburgh.
