Burdick
BEDFORD – Bedford Town Supervisor Christopher Burdick announced on Monday that he will seek the State Senate seat being vacated by Democrat George Latimer when he becomes Westchester County executive in January.
Burdick was re-elected last month. In 2013 he became the first
Democrat to win that seat in decades. Prior to being elected supervisor,
he served as a town councilman, first elected in 2007.
Burdick said there must be Democratic unity in the Senate and he pledged to caucus with the mainline Democrats and support Democratic Senate Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. He said the break-away Independent Democratic Conference has given the Republicans control of the house.
“Westchester voters need to have confidence in their elected officials which is why I am running for the Senate,” Burdick said. “I have a record of results, integrity, and bipartisanship while standing up for progressive values.”
A special elected would be called by the governor but no announcement has been made at this time.
