Hillcrest Fire Chief Bowers said the fire, reported around 3 a.m., started in the garage area of the home. It was extinguished before it was able to spread to the rest of the house.
Orange and Rockland Utilities shut the electrical power to the house.
Spring Valley Fire Department also responded to the scene along with Ramapo Police detectives and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office BCI unit.  Police said it does not appear that the fire was started intentionally but the investigation continues.
The displaced residents went to a neighbor’s house to keep warm but will need to find a place to stay until the house is repaired. Rockland County Red Cross responded to the scene and is making arrangements for the residents.
