GOSHEN – With the Casino
World Catskills resort opening early next year and the anticipated construction
of Legoland in Goshen, Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus has renewed
his call for significant improvements to Route 17 from Harriman to Monticello.
Neuhaus noted that a large project to reconfigure the Woodbury Thruway interchange is out to bid right now.
“That is going to be a high-speed toll. The next step is to move that to future Interstate 86.” Neuhaus noted in the summer there is more traffic with vacationers. “We can’t just say no to businesses coming here because you have traffic. We need to address the traffic issues.”
That includes adding a third lane in each direction on Route 17, Neuhaus said. Senator Charles Schumer first secured study funding for the project some 10 years ago, but there has been no movement toward adding the additional lanes.
