TOWN OF NEWBURGH – State Police have arrested a 43-year-old hamlet
of Wallkill man on a murder charge.

After a lengthy investigation, Christopher Smith was charged on Tuesday
in the death of an unidentified man in the Town of Newburgh.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation by State Police at Highland into
a missing person.

Troopers executed a search warrant at a residence on Quaker Street where
human remains were recovered.

Cherise Bain lives not far from the location where the remains were found
on Quaker Street. “It is terrible, shocking, extremely unsettling,”
she told Mid-Hudson News.

The investigation is continuing with attempts being made to identify the
victim.

State Police were assisted by the Orange County District Attorney’s
Office, county medical examiner and Plattekill Fire Department.

Smith was arraigned and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.
