NEWBURGH – Hudson River Sloop Clearwater Environmental Action Director Manna Jo Greene is urging Governor Cuomo to sign legislation to create tanker avoidance zones in the Hudson River.
The goal is to block future commercial anchorages from cropping up in areas of the river like in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
Greene said legislation to create those tanker avoidance zones was approved in the legislature last summer.
“Back in June the New York State Senate and Assembly passed legislation that authorized the Department of Environmental Conservation to take steps to protect the most sensitive and important areas of the Hudson River and communities along its banks,” she said. “This bill is a critical element of our collective efforts to stop dangerous and unsightly new anchorages on the Hudson River.”
Greene is urging interested area residents to contact the governor’s office urging him to sign the legislation.
Greene made her comments on the Mid-Hudson News “Your Environment” program.
