Poughkeepsie murder investigation continues

POUGHKEEPSIE – Police
in Poughkeepsie are continuing to investigate a murder that occurred Thursday
evening when a group walked in front of a car resulting in words being
exchanged with one of the youths stabbing the victim.

Police said a 42-year-old Hyde Park man, Nakia Burton, was stabbed in
the chest around 6 p.m. and died later at Vassar Brothers Medical Center
where had been transported by a private vehicle.

The stabbing was first reported to have happened on Smith Street in the
area of Harrison Street, It was later determined to have taken place on
Winnikee Avenue.

A group of males, between the ages of 15 and 18, crossed the street in
front of the vehicle. Words were exchanged and as the victim began to
get out of the car, a suspect, described as a black male between 15 and
18, about medium build, warming a white t-shirt, ran up to the victim
and stabbed him in the check.

The victim fell back into the car and was driven to the hospital.

The group ran off in an unknown direction.
