WASHINGTON – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18), the first openly gay member of Congress elected from New York, released the following statement in response to the death of LGBTQ rights activist Edith Windsor.
Windsor was the plaintiff and namesake of the historic 2013 Windsor v. United States Supreme Court decision, which overturned the Defense of Marriage Act.
“Edith Windsor isn’t just an LGBTQ hero, she’s an American hero. Even in her eighties, she was willing to stand up and fight for equality before the Supreme Court. Her strength and determination laid the groundwork for the other gains our community has made in recent years, and she will be missed,” said Maloney “I hope everyone will join me in mourning this tremendous loss for the LGBTQ community, the State of New York, and the country.”
Windsor, 88, died Tuesday in New York City.
