NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh still has the positions of police and fire chief vacant because none of the candidates lives in the city or wants to move in.
The city council tonight will hold a public hearing to consider changing the residency requirement for key department heads.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino has tentatively selected a candidate for
police chief, but that individual does not live in Newburgh.
“I may be asking the council to consider a waiver of residency with regard to this candidate, who lives not too far outside the municipal boundary,” Ciaravino said. “If we do not do that, we may have a continuing dilemma with regard to the police chief position.”
Three assistant fire chiefs, none of whom live in the city, have passed the most recent civil service test for chief. That could be another case for amending the residency requirement.
The issue appears to be split with some council members supporting the current requirement and others leaning toward an amendment.
