VILLAGE OF LIBERTY – Two men are under arrest following an investigation into an assault at a gas station on Main Street in Liberty.
Police were called to the scene around 4:15 p.m. on Friday, August 18 for a report of an unresponsive man on the ground. Officers found a 34-year-old man who had been injured and was disoriented. He had been the victim of an assault and was rendered unconscious.
Christian Garcia, 24, is accused assaulted the man and while he laid on the ground unconscious, Garcia’s 18-year-old friend rifled through the victim’s pockets stealing money and personal items.
Both Garcia and the 18-year-old, whose name police did not make public, were caught within hours.
The 18-year-old was charged with felony grand larceny. He is in Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail. The DA’s office had recommended $25,000 bail.
Garcia was charged with misdemeanor assault. He was jailed in lieu of $750 bail. The DA recommended $1,500 bail. Garcia later posted bail and was released.
