GARDINER – A 26-year-old male driver and 18-year-old female passenger were killed in a one-car crash on Route 208 at the intersection of Plains Road in the Town of Gardiner.  The accident occurred at 2:26 a.m. on Friday, July 28, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Deputies said a car had struck a tree with both occupants of the car pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation suggests the Dodge Avenger was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and failed to negotiate a curve in the road, police said.
The names of the victims were not immediately released pending notification of relatives.
Deputies were assisted by the State Police, Mobile Life Support Services and fire departments from Gardiner, Modena and Wallkill.
Anyone who may have been in the area at the time and may have witnessed anything prior to the accident is asked to contact the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office at 845-338-3640.
