MIDDLETOWN – When the Middletown City Police Commission meets early next week Mayor Joseph DeStefano will recommend Bureau Commander of Operations Lt. John Ewanciw to serve as acting chief. Current Chief Ramon Bethencourt will be retiring at the end of the month.
The mayor appears to be ready to nominate Ewanciw as permanent chief in short order. The two met this week.
“One important part of that discussion is that although he has ideas on things to do, there is nothing in place that he would do different than Ray Bethencourt did,” DeStefano said.
The retiring chief is credited with bringing community policing to Middletown and earning respect between city residents and the police force.
