Two arrested in Port Jervis multiple stabbing

PORT JERVIS – Two people are under arrest in Port Jervis after an incident early Wednesday morning at the city’s Riverfront Park in which two men sustained life-threatening stab wounds and a third man suffered physical injuries during an altercation.
The wounded victims, a 19-year-old Pennsylvania man with stab wounds to his lung, and a 44-year-old Port Jervis man, who suffered several stab wounds, were transported to Bon Secours Community Hospital and then airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for emergency surgery.
Following investigation, police charged Maretta Leonard, 19, of Port Jervis with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. Talmadge Leonard, Jr., 21, was charged with assault and attempted robbery.
The case was investigated by Port Jervis Police with assistance from the Eastern Pike Regional Police Department in Pennsylvania, New York State Police and detectives from the Forensic Identification Unit.
The knife believed to have been used in the assault was recovered in a heavily wooded area adjacent to the Delaware River at Riverside Park by the city’s new canine team, Officer Andrew Haniuk and his K-9 partner Roan.
Port Jervis detectives are continuing the investigation with assistance from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and State Police Forensic ID Unit.
A motive for the attack has not yet been established.
