NEWBURGH – A posting on social media helped Newburgh City Police
arrest a man for allegedly beating another man with a chain.

The attack in the area of 478 Broadway on Saturday, May 20, was posted
on Facebook and YouTube and aided police in the arrest of Carlos Melendez
on Wednesday, May 24. He was charged with first-degree assault.

The incident was investigated by Detective Yovany Rodriguez.

It was first believed that the victim was an intoxicated man on the sidewalk,
but investigation, including with examination of the social media postings,
confirmed he had been attacked. Whoever recorded the videos and posted
them has since taken them down, police said.

Authorities are continuing to search for the identity of a second victim
in the assault.
