POUGHKEEPSIE – Everyone from the mayor to the common council chairwoman agrees that Poughkeepsie is a “safe city,” but they want to put their definitions of what that means in writing in the form of a resolution.
Alderman Michael Young has been leading that effort, which was discussed at Monday night’s council session. Lawmakers want to tweak some of the language before it is approved.
Council Chairwoman Natasha Cherry said Poughkeepsie already protects its residents.
“We are already doing the things that are outlined in the resolution. We would never ask anyone to break the law,” Cherry said. “We would never go against federal or state law; however, we are a safe and welcoming city and we should have paperwork to display that so that all of our residents feel safe and welcome.”
Mayor Robert Rolison noted in his remarks to the council Poughkeepsie is a “welcoming city.”
Officials said the language and intent of the local resolution follows the guidelines as set forth by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
