Seven years for assault with a motor vehicle

MONTICELLO – A Lava, New York man was sentenced in Sullivan County Court on Wednesday to seven years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision for his convictions for attempted assault and assault as felonies, and two counts of misdemeanor DWI.
Vernon DeGroat, 53, was convicted after a jury trial in May 2016.
On June 30, 2015, on School Street in Narrowsburg, DeGroat intentionally drove his pickup truck at another man ramming him and causing physical injury including a broken clavicle and a head injury. The victim was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
In the process of striking the victim, DeGroat drove his truck into a house causing damage to the structure.
District Attorney James Farrell said the assault was the product of what appearance to be a jealous range by DeGroat and his believe that his wife was having an affair with the victim.
DeGroat’s driver’s license was revoked by the court and he was ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution for the damage to the house.
