NEWBURGH – The City of
Newburgh may be one step closer to hiring a permanent fire chief. Assistant
Chief Terry Ahlers has been serving as acting chief.

The city’s Civil Service Commission Wednesday certified the list
of candidates who took the test earlier this year and passed it.

Civil Service Administrator Michelle Mills announced that three people
took the exam and all three passed it. Under civil service law, at least
three people must pass an exam in order for one person to be appointed
from the list. In Newburgh, the city manager selects the successful candidate
from that list.

The job comes with a residency requirement and while Ahlers would like
the job permanently and City Manager Michael Ciaravino would like to appoint
him to it, he lives in the Town of Newburgh.

When the city manager will name a new chief is unclear at this time.
