NEWBURGH – The rules affecting Newburgh employee use of city-owned cell phones, note pads, and computers have not been updated in some six years, and as Councilwoman Jeanie Abrams put it, that is like a century in computer terms.
Despite a detailed upgrade to the policy, which includes no personal use or storage of information on city-owned devices and allowing monitoring access by administration at any given time, the council put off adoption of the rules on Monday night.
The monitoring of device activity did not sit well with Councilwoman Hillary Rayford.
“I don’t think the legislative body should have the same content as the other city workers’ IT rules and regulations,” Rayford said.
Councilwoman Cindy Holmes is still hung up on the information on her city iPad being wiped out without her knowledge last year.
In the end, even though a motion to table a vote on the new policy was made, normally requiring an immediate vote, discussion continued for several more minutes before council members voted not to take action on it.
