NEWBURGH – New water leak detection equipment purchased by the City of Newburgh has discovered a more than 20-year-old leak in a 12-inch fire plug on private property.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino told the city council Monday night that the leak has been repaired, but not before massive amounts of water have leaked over the years.
“It is believed that this leak had been occurring since the early 1990’s and when we measured it at the time we stopped it and cut it off, it was leaking at approximately 100,000 gallons per day,” he said.
Since Ciaravino came to Newburgh three years ago, the city has uncovered and plugged several leaks in the city’s water system.
