TOWN OF WALLKILL – Police Chief Robert Hertman is continuing the Wallkill Police Department’s 21st Century Policing practices with the implementation of a third component of the program initiated by former President Obama.
The first group of eight officers underwent two days of training on how to talk a distraught person with a weapon other than a firearm into surrendering without harming themselves or anyone else.
Hertman said such incidents are aimed at preventing any harm to the individual.
“It is engaging the subject with the goal of voluntary compliance,” the chief said. “We will spend all the time necessary to de-escalate the situation when the person is not a threat to anybody else other than themselves. If they are isolated and contained and they only pose an imminent threat to themselves or the threat of engaging in property damage, we will take all the time necessary to deescalate the situation.”
Hertman was one of the lecturing police officials during conferences on 21st Century Policing at the White House last year.
