PORT JERVIS – City Police in Port Jervis will hold a prescription drug take-back program to prevent drug abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
The program will be held on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police headquarters at 20 Hammond Street in Port Jervis. There is no charge to drop off the unwanted medicines and no questions will be asked.
The police are partnering with Operation PJ PRIDE Community Drug Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The drug abuse prevention initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, said Police Chief William Worden. “Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.”
Worden said studies have shown that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
In addition to the police station drop off on Saturday, April 29, officers will be going to senior housing complexes for on-site drop-off for residents. They include Hillside Terrace Apartments in the community room from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; Machackemach Village, community room from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and Water’s Edge Apartments, main office area, from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
