GOSHEN – When the state begins replacing the Route 32 bridge over the Thruway on the Orange-Ulster border, local public officials are concerned with the impact changing speed limits will have on the traffic flow of the detour road.
Right now, Forest Road in the Town of Newburgh, in Orange County, the limit is 55 MPH while in the Town of Plattekill, Ulster County, it is 45 MPH.
Leigh Benton is the Orange County legislator representing that area.
“It can create a dangerous situation, especially, we believe, in
a construction time period where people are using a detour, and when people
see ‘detour,’ they are probably being taken way out of their
way, so we are hoping that doesn’t cause people to speed even faster
and cause a more dangerous situation,” Benton said.
The Orange County lawmakers are asking the state to study the traffic and speed limit and to consider making it lower and consistent in both counties.
