BEACON – Cleanup of contamination
at the Long Dock Beacon brownfield site on the Hudson River at the City
of Beacon has been completed.
The Scenic Hudson Land Trust, which owns the property, performed the remediation with oversight by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Portions of the peninsula adjacent to the Hudson River had previous uses as a salvage yard, a major oil storage facility and an unregulated fill site.
Soil testing found PCBs, arsenic, lead, mercury, and semi-volatile organic compounds. Contaminated soils were replaced by clean fill.
The northeast corner of the site currently houses a rehabilitated red barn used as an art gallery and a parking area. The remainder of the site is undeveloped with the southwest area used for parking.
The site is zoned for commercial/recreational use with a portion currently used as a park, which extends from the site to the south. The surrounding area has a combination of residential, commercial and light industrial land uses.
