Volunteers faced a losing battle as flames consumed the cottage
in minutes

LAKE CARMEL – A Lake Carmel woman escaped when fire raced through
her three-room cottage at 19 Nepera Road overlooking the lake.

The fire broke out before 8 a.m. on Monday and rapidly swept through the
residence, a 1947 Daily Mirror home, one of many that dotted the lakefront
for many years.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Putnam Fire Investigation
team, but Kent Town Police said it did not appear to be suspicious.

Rosko was provided with shelter from a neighbor. Her two cats also escaped
the flames.

Assisting at the scene were the Putnam County Sheriff’s office,
NYSEG, counselors from the Red Cross disaster team, the Putnam County
Fire Investigation Team, and Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services.
