Driver in fatal crash charged with vehicular manslaughter

SAUGERTIES – The man, who was driving a car that ran off Route 32 in Saugerties striking a utility pole and killing his passenger on January 31, was charged on Thursday with vehicular manslaughter and reckless endangerment.
Saugerties Police investigated the crash of a an SUV driven by John Playford, 21, of Saugerties, which struck a utility pole, crossed the road and struck a house causing extensive damage to the structure.
Playford’s passenger, Jacob Sweeny, 22, of Saugerties, was ejected from the vehicle and killed.
Based on investigation and results of forensic testing, police said Playford
was driving under the influence of alcohol – more than two times
the legal limit – at the time Sweeny died.
Playford was sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
