MARLBORO – A Newburgh man is charged with assault for what police said was his “inadvertent” shooting of a woman in the face with a legally owned handgun.
The incident occurred on Sunday in a private residence in Marlboro.
The victim, a 21-year-old woman, was transported to Westchester Medical Center and was listed in critical condition.
State Police investigators said Darren Olympia, 21, retrieved the handgun which he “recklessly discharged” once and struck the woman in the face.  Olympia was charged with assault and reckless endangerment, both as felonies. He was sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
