Columbia County man indicted for two drug overdose deaths

ALBANY – A Niverville man was arraigned in federal court on Monday on charges that he distributed heroin and fentanyl that caused two overdose deaths in Columbia County in July 2016.
According to the indictment, on July 3, 2016, Jacob Ebel, 29, distributed heroin and fentanyl to one person who died as a result of taking the drugs. Between July 18 and July 23, he distributed heroin and fentanyl to the spouse of another person. That individual took the drugs and died.
Ebel is also charged with possessing heroin and fentanyl with the intent to distribute them, and conspiring to possess and distribute heroin and fentanyl.
If convicted of all charges, Ebel would face between 20 years and life in prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and a term of post-release supervision of three years to life.
The case is the result of a joint investigation conducted by the DEA, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and State Police with the assistance of the office of Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka and is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Michael Barnett.
