SAUGERTIES – The Saugerties Police Department ended 2016 with a $10,000 surplus despite covering the costs of union contracts.
Chief Joseph Sinagra said his administration did some financial juggling to meet all expenses and still wind up in the black.
“When the town said we were going to absorb additional costs, my administration took a look at our budget; we were able to put some projects off that we thought we would get done in 2016 and we reworked the budget in a way that we were able to absorb $121,000 extra in that budget to pay the retros and to pay the current increase that the police officers received through the collective bargaining agreement,” the chief said.
This was the fifth year in a row that Sinagra was able to end the year in the black with a $2.4 million spending plan.
The department has 24 full-time, 10 part-time and six reserve officers.
